Finishes

WATER-BASED URETHANE FINISH

We prefer Bona’s commercial grade water-based urethane finishes. The standard over the bare wood or the stain is one coat of Bona’s Sealer and two top-coats of Bona’s MEGA. An additional top-coat is recommended initially in heavy traffic areas or if you have pets and children. The subsequent information is only applicable to these two products. Other brands of water-based urethane finish have different drying times and curing times. Please check with the scheduler for any additional information regarding your brand of finish.

Each coat of finish takes approximately 1-3 hours to dry. We either apply one or two coats per day. You may walk on the floor between coats in stock feet if the floor is dry (only light traffic).

Bona’s products have the “ENVIRONMENTAL CHOICE” seal of approval. The VOC compliant and non-flammable formulas are virtually odorless.

MEGA has a slight honey cast (not as dark as the oil-based polyurethane finish). If you wish to mimic the look of oil-based polyurethane finish but want to use water-based urethane finish, just request that a NEUTRAL stain is applied.

70% cured in 24 hours and 100% cured in only SEVEN DAYS.

MEGA is the newest Bona finish and in testing conducted by the Wood Sciences Department at Colorado State University, Bona’s MEGA finish proved unmatched durability and outperformed  all solvent and water-based urethane finishes tested in terms of wear-through, scuff, scratch, chemical resistance, and overall visual performance. It was subjected to being walked on over 400,000 times by students with roller blades, bicycles, skateboards, and pets tracking in water, snow, salt, and dirt. That’s equal to a life span of 10 years in an average size kitchen with a family of four (life span is subject to proper floor maintenance).

Please wait a minimum of 48 hours to move back furniture (if possible). Do not “drag” furniture – carefully place pieces and use felt glides on the bottom of furniture that you will move around.

Do not use any cleaning products on the floor for a full week after the final coat. If you must “clean” your floor, please just use a clean dry cloth/mop.

Please wait 30 days to put down area rugs.

MEGA is available in SATIN, SEMI-GLOSS, OR GLOSS.

Do not apply blue painters tape or any other tape on your newly refinished hardwood floors. The tape will damage the finish.

TRAFFIC FINISH

Bonatech Traffic brand wood floor finish is the latest generation of waterborne polyurethane’s utilizing BonaTech technology. Formulated specifically for heavy-traffic commercial and residential hardwood floors, BONATECH TRAFFIC provides unprecedented durability in a wood floor finish.

Outperforms moisture cure finishes without the hazardous side effects, and all the benefits of a waterborne finish.

Fast Curing Rate.  Minimizes downtime, allowing quicker access to the floors.

The curing process takes approximately 7 days (75% cured after 1 day, 90% after 3 days). The floor may be walked on after 24 hours, but the floor is susceptible to scuffing or marring prior to completion of the curing time.

Fast Drying.  2-3 hours between coats.

Exceptional Build. With excellent flow and leveling.

Available in Commercial Satin and Semi-Gloss only. Provides lowest gloss level available.

Clear and colorless, which highlights the true color of stained or natural wood floors. Will not change color over time, allowing for easy touch-up.

Nonflammable with a non-offending odor.

Water clean-up

VOC compliant – VOC does not exceed 350 grams per liter.

The Janka (or side) Hardness Test measures the force required to embed a .444 inch steel ball to half it’s diameter in wood. It is one of the best measures of the ability of a wood species to withstand denting and wear. By the same token, it is also a good indicator of how hard or easy a species is to saw or nail.

Care and Maintenance

Care and Maintenance of Your Hardwood  Floors

Vacuuming the floor routinely is the most important step. This removes dirt, grit, and other abrasives that might scratch your floor. Only use vacuums with soft bristles or put protective felt glides on any metal parts or attachments. The “Dirt Devil” brand broom vacuum (with bristles and a soft rubber pad) is a popular brand to use.

You may dust mop your flooring with a clean, dry, cloth mop. DO NOT use “Endust”, “Pledge”, or any other product to dust mop your flooring. These products might make your floors slippery. If you use these products, we will not be able to “re-coat” your hardwood flooring.

Keep animal’s nails trimmed, as they are capable of scratching wood floors.

When moving heavy appliances or furniture, put down a quarter-inch sheet of plywood to protect the floor, and use a dolly. Never try to slide or roll heavy objects across your floor without taking these precautions.

Use entry mats to clean shoes to avoid tracking oils from asphalt driveways and streets as they can permanently stain a floor.
